THIS MUST BE THE PLACE - the movie

Postby Sevy on September 8th, 2011, 4:08 pm

Just saw Paolo Sorrentino's movie "This must be the place" (out in France now).
I don't want to talk about the movie/story here (it would be too long) but it is quiet good and I recommand it.

The music is really great and DB (as himself) very good. Here is an interview of DB :
"Paolo asked me to be in a couple of small scenes and play myself which of course raises the question
- how do I do that? I told Paolo that I have no ambitions to be an actor, and he said ‘No, I don’t want
you to be yourself, I want you to play David Byrne,’ which seemed even more convoluted! But I
thought Sean Penn is going to be so much in character, so if I just react to what his character says as
I would in real life, then that could work. We make a pretty weird couple, this Cheyenne character
and I, though the idea of our being friends isn’t so farfetched."

Also a very good live performance (and nice shooting) of THIS MUST BE THE PLACE by DB and his band.

Weird. I totally missed hearing about this flick. Does DB actually perform all of the songs he wrote, or is it like "True Stories", where others perform them?

Nat, where have you been? Check out the pics and Journal post from the Canbes Film Festival "The Glamorous Life.". Earvurm alert - "without Love, it ain't much. Do do do do..."

Yes, DB is in the pic with his band!!! Bummer for you though, I think they're doing NM! You have to go anyway. Besides that, I think it follows the True Stories model. I'm not sure it's out in the US yet.

Gawd, I hope it doesn't follow the "True Stories" model.

That one has a great soundtrack, though.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. DB is in the movie singing Naive Melody. Other people sing other stuff he co-wrote.

Then I'll pass. I despise Naive Melody, and I only want to hear DB in the movie.

:-D

Here’s a track list where, alas, DB sings only one song, and it’s NM. Sorry, Nat.

Some of the rest of you might want to check out the website, which also features performances of three of the songs DB cowrote with Will Oldham.

There was a piece about this on the Culture Show tonight. It will be on the BBC website later, BBC 2, towards the end but before Florence.
