Song of the Week- July 3- Everything that Happens . . .

Postby Aspiemom on July 4th, 2011, 1:49 am

So, I'm sitting in the park with Aspieboy watching MacBeth, when I hear Lady MacBeth lament that her husband has too much of the "milk of human kindness" in him to kill the king. Huh, is there a reference to the Scottish Play in "Everything that Happens Will Happen Today," or is this just a phrase that has passed into common usage? The play turns on the characters believing that they know what will happen in the future, thanks to the convenient witches, who get them into all kinds of trouble. Our tragic hero finally concludes "tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, lighting fools the way to dusty death." I used to think this was just nihilistic. But the line could be discussing the foolishness of basing your behavior today on what you think will happen tomorrow. It's unpredictable, after all. Anything could happen. What do you think?

Here's the lyric.

I ride on a perfect freeway
Many people on that road
I heard the sound of someone laughing
I saw my neighbors car explode

Just up ahead
Against the sky
Quicker than you blink your eye

Oh my brother, I still wonder, are you alright?
And among the living, we are giving,
all through the night

From the milk of human kindness
From the breast we all partake
Hungry for a social contract
She welcomes you with dark embrace

(puts)
socks and shoes
Upon our feet
Little fishes swim upstream

Oh my brother, I still wonder, are you alright?
In the deepest silence, gold and diamonds,
all through the night

Everything that happens will happen today
& nothing has changed, but nothing's the same
and ev'ry tomorrow could be yesterday
& and ev'rything that happens will happen today

ev'rything that happens will happen today
and nothing has changed but nothing's the same
& ev'ry tomorrow could be yesterday
and ev'rything that happens could happen today

A heartfelt performance on the RRR dvd, I like the comment Brian gives prior to the song, on how the title means 2 things at the same time. Speaking of that:

Interesting thread. I don’t understand half of it, but I liked the other half.

Eno was in the NYT yesterday discussing little ideas like words and music. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/05/arts/music/brian-eno-and-rick-holland-release-drum-between-the-bells.html

I thought Eno’s comment on the “Everything” lyric was a bit obvious. Yes, "everything that happens could happen today" includes both good and bad things. It’s almost a problem rather than a strength of the lyric, as it borders on banality. Hardly shocking that things occur in the present rather than the past or the future. Still, I hear critics calling it a “lullabye,” and I’m glad Eno pointed out that it’s not one. Maybe if the words are sung quietly, people will find anything soothing (“Rockabye baby, on the tree top. When the wind blows, the cradle will rock. When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall, and down will come baby, cradle and all!”) Exploding car, missing person, la-la-la, nightie night. I’m not sleepy! :o

In this song, the shock occurs “quicker than you blink your eye.” (I wonder whether eyes would have been better than eye, except that it then would not rhyme with sky. But who blinks one eye?) DB used similar language in “Somebody” when he sang “In the blink of an eye, everything changes. We gotta start all over.” That song has an upbeat sound despite the lyric. :jumpyjumpy: I wonder whether the lyrics are supposed to be in tension with the music or somehow integrated with it?

GREAT album. The song itself? Not so much.

I haven't played "Here Lies Love" since the first round, but ETHWHT is in regular rotation. Awesome stuff.

ETH from most to least favorite for me:

Strange Overtones
I feel my stuff
Wanted for life
Poor boy
Life is long
The River
One fine day
Everything that happens
My big nurse
Home
The Lighthouse

“Home” is second to last? :bawling: It might be my favorite. (I could waste a lot of time trying to figure that out, just to change my mind tomorrow. . . .)

Nat, I’m surprised that “One Fine Day” is your favorite. Given your disdain for “Naive Melody” and “My Big Nurse,” I though that you preferred that songs be dark and up tempo ala “Houses in Motion.” Must be more to it than that. :respect:

Only one spin for HeLL? Give it another chance! You can hear db singing backup, playing guitar, complaining about rain, combined with female vocalists singing disco! It’s so much easier to sing along with women! Then again, I’m a closet disco fan, so I like the sound of the album.

I like “Everything” the song- It captures the hopeful/dreadful tone of the album. Maybe that’s why they have the same title. Oe, does “todo mundo” mean “everything” too?

Sweetie, OFD is nothing like effing NM. OFD has that awesome arrangement (adding choruses as it goes along) as well as just being pretty.

Maybe there is a link between this song and “Heaven.” After all, “heaven heaven is a place a place where nothing nothing ever happens.” This song could be the flip-side of that idea- “everything that happens will happen today” rather than in some future paradise. :hippy:
