Song of the Week- June 12- "Seven Years"

Postby Aspiemom on June 13th, 2011, 2:16 am

Veni sancte spiritus. Veni sancte spiritus. Veni sancte spiritus. It's finally Pentecost. Heard the story today about the apostles hiding in a room until they were released by tongues of fire to proclaim their message to the world. Later on, most of them were executed.

But, right now, I'm watching the Tony's. I love American musical theater!

Why am I a telling you this? Because this week's song straddles both topics. "Seven Years" from "Here Lies Love." More at the next ad break.

For now, here are the lyrics.
Aquino:
For seven years I’ve been in here
Seven years down in the hole—they said
“Your watch, your glasses and your wedding ring
You won’t need them anymore”

I felt abandoned—I felt cast aside
So where is God who never sleeps?
I heard a voice say, “Why do you cry?”
Then I found my inner peace

Imelda:
Ninoy, you were my first love
But you said I was too tall
The heart gets stronger and grows colder
For the Rose of Tacloban

Aquino:
I begged to God could he forgive me now?
And take back all those things I said
This moment was a gift from above
Maybe it’s some kind of test

Imelda:
Santo Niño, Santo Niño
Take good care of him
Santo Niño, Santo Niño
Take good care of him

Ninoy, remember a long time ago
You used to walk me to my home?
Who set you free? Who built this hospital?
You think I hate you but you’re wrong

Aquino:
For seven years I wore this crucifix
A necklace that watched over me
Face to face with mortality
I let go of all my fears

Imelda:
Now my husband he might hate you
But you know I saved your life
Ninoy, don’t be a hero
I beg you, don’t get on that flight

Imelda:
Santo Niño, Santo Niño
Take good care of him
Santo Niño, Santo Niño
Take good care of him

Santo Niño, Santo Niño
Take good care of him
Santo Niño, Santo Niño
Take good care of him

Ad break thoughts-

This is a song that could actually be staged. It has enough drama! The characters are talking to each other (although not necessarily listening). That's the breakthrough of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and many of the songs in "HeLL" ignore it. Some other songs tell rather than show.

Both characters are religious. Aquino has used his religion to do something incredibly brave- to stand up to the regime at the cost of his own life. No greater love. And his death brought about the end of the tyranny. I wonder whether he could have done it without his religious belief? (Similar theme in "Book of Mormon" btw. Religion may be silly, but what if we're hard-wired for it? What if believing that Eden is located in Jackson County, Missouri somehow makes you a stronger person?) On the other hand, Imelda is praying to Baby Jesus in an apparent effort to absolve herself of responsibility for his imprisonment and death. Interesting juxtaposition of the two believers in this song.

The lyric "your watch, your glasses, and your wedding ring" stands out for me. Talk about an assault on personal identity. Similar to Goffman's sociological study "Asylums" and also "we will return your things to you when its time for you to leave" from "Tiny Apocolypse." Aquino has lost time, sight, and his marriage, but somehow lets go of all his fears anyway. I wish the musical had more about him. He's interesting, and maybe you could get a love story out of it. (A good show normally has one. A good life has something romantic in it).

DB's line "take back all those things I said" makes me wonder who's talking. Is it Aquino or DB. Because DB has said a lot of stuff about God: "Come on down you old fart. Let's see if you have got a heart." Wonder if he would like to take any of it back?

Gotta go. My dvr picked tonight to go kaput. :(

I will have to leave you on this one, Here lies love is the album I'm the least familiar with.
Howdy-do? This is Peter McCalister, the FATHER. I'd like a hotel room,
please, with an extra-large bed, a TV, and one of those little
refrigerators that you have to open with a key. Credit card? You got it!

I was trying to put together my thoughts on martyrdom stories, and wondering why some deaths spark revolutions and others don't. (Those boys tortured to death in Syria, will it change anything?) Anyway, I came across this essay in the NYT that says it much better than I could.

Same topic, comic treatment. This is “Man Up” from “The Book of Mormon” 2010 Tony Winner for Best Musical!

Okay, I'm talking to myself. I'm gonna take a step back and let someone else pick a song for this week, if they want to.
