Song of the Week- June 5- "Burnt by the Sun"

Postby Aspiemom on June 6th, 2011, 2:21 am

What is happening to my skin? Yuck, it's peeling off! SPF 30 is bullshit, but I should know better than to trust that marketing by now. I've had this one on the short list for awhile, but this week it just called to me. Ouch.

Lyric:

Atom smashers in the cocktail lounge tonight
Op'ra singers in the graveyard keeping time
& the DJ mixes them all
& the Music rhymes but it crawls...

We were burnt by the sun
Havin' way too much fun
Headline gumball overload
Did the whitelight bring you down?
Does the daylight bring you down?

Money pours down and it drown the little man
Parking lot attendents fill their pockets with their hands
& the children laugh in your face
They can see what you have erased

The music comes from Hydrogen bombs
Rock bands died when amatuers won
Data in a hurry, oozing in the rubble
Wipe it up baby, gonna get yourself in trouble

We were burnt by the sun
Havin' way too much fun
The Church of Private Enterprise
Did the sunshine bring you down?

I love salt, I love sweets
I know there's danger but I fall asleep
The curves, the gasps, the love of life
Headline, gumbox, faceless paradise

Life rafts bobbin' at the bottom of the pier
Wood burns faster if it's soaked in gasoline
All these towns look the same , ev'rybody's clean
Roll 'em out, cheap and fast, kiss me when I fall...

We were burnt by the sun
Havin' way too much fun
Downtown sleazeball paradise
& I feel like going home...

Alchohol Razorblades Take me now Holiday
All the clouds are miles/far away Ev'ryone is far away

The live version is really good!

I love this line: "& the children laugh in your face/They can see what you have erased"

Where's "When dogs make love they don't look at themselves..." or am I mixing that up with another song?

You're right. These lyrics are messed up. I cut and pasted them off DB's website and assumed they were correct. I'll try to fix when I get to a computer. Stuck in the airport for now. :(

Agreed! I wonder what the kids are laughing at? The line is "in your face," but I keep thinking they're laughing at your face- bad makeup or Botox maybe.

Here is my attempt to restore the missing words. I put my additions in italics. Some of the lyrics were just wrong too. I put deletions in parentheses. Sorry.

Rubbin' and a-scratchin', itchin' all the time
Stop me if I talk too much, I'll do another line

Thanks for cluing me in! These lyrics don't cohere in my mind- individual lines make sense, but the overall lyric is puzzling. Lots of lines about money, but also sex and food? I like the "stop me if I talk too much" line after the description of the dogs. That was a little too much info! And it reflects a few other lines like "tell us a little bit, but not too much" from "Houses in Motion". (Speech therapists sometimes coach kids with Asperger's to ask whether they're talking too much.) The alcohol/razorblades coda seems inconsistent with the sensory pleasures and love of life earlier in the song. Maybe that's the point? We bob up and down like the folks in the life rafts?

The arrangement and the melody grab me more than the lyric. I may be wrong, but I think the song is in e minor, which makes the e flat on the words "down" and "long" about as dissonant as possible. E-flat is also the warmest sounding note, so maybe that's why it doesn't hurt your ears too much.

The strings serve as percussion for the verses too, and the percussion, when it does come in, is pretty light. Everything is syncopated, and kind of has that bobbing feeling.

Coke-heads yammer on and on; it's a side effect of the drug. "Stop me if I talk too much, do another line" (of coke)

The whole thing seems to be a stream of consciousness about that drug in particular. The mention of "razor blades" (which are used to gather the coke into a line) - this is one of the few DB songs that made sense the first time I heard it.

I always thought "Houses In Motion" was about alcoholism. Walking the (sobriety test for cops) line that divides and dissolves, as with double vision from being drunk. "Not talking about, not many at all (in denial) "I'll turn it around, no trouble at all" (I can stop drinking any time I want to)

"Right about then, is when she'd give up; she had closed her eyes, she had give up hope" Living with an alcoholic who has no intention of quitting.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's another one of his that seemed obvious.

Cocaine- I kind of get it. Silly me, I thought it was "another line" of verse! Cocaine works with lines like "everybody's clean" and "sleepless downtown overlord" too.

I like your sobriety test idea. I had thought of "walking a line" as similar to Johnny Cash's lyric "because you're mine, I walk the line". Like, hold down a job, don't party too hard, don't have affairs.... The difference being that DB's lyric considers walking a line to be "barely enough to be living" or "digging his own grave". Never could understand the despairing woman though. I like your idea better. Thanks.

Actually it all fit in "Houses In Motion" since drinking long enough is terrible for your health, so "barely enough to be living" makes sense.

"Get out of the way; no time to begin" I take as he just can't be bothered to try to stop right now. "This isn't the time; so nothing was done" - same thing. Making excuses.

I interpret they are laughing at someone's attempt to cover/deny their past mistakes. I have read David talking about this song, I'll go find his comment.

Maybe it's a song about the dangers and pleasures of excess- be it drugs, sugar, salt, sex, sun, money . . . . :drink: The "I love salt, I love sweets" bridge is delivered like a shocking confession. But, really, who doesn't? People just don't always admit to it. I still get a bobbing feeling from the syncopated violin part that reminds me of trying to backfloat on the ocean waves.

The lyrics have some British usages. "Burnt" is not usually used as a verb in American English, only as an adjective as in burnt orange or burnt toast. Americans would say "burned" by the sun. Americans don't go "on holiday", either, we go on vacation. Even "sweets" is a little British. British over-consumption of sugar can be a bit shocking to Americans, actually. Weirdly, Britain is a fairly hard place to get a sunburn, given the rain and the northern latitude. But is a Brit went south on vacation, aha, he would burn like a potato chip, uh, like a crisp.

I dunno - getting the munchies go along with smoking pot. (many of which are salty, such as chips)

Craving sweets is common with heroin addiction.

"I know there's danger, but I fall asleep" - Cokeheads are very paranoid.

Sorry, but I still think it's about drugs.

Mmm, drugs are bad. M'kay? :geek:

I think the beginning is about information overload and the effect of technology on the music industry. "Rock bands died when amateurs won" has to be about the do it yourself trends in music. Maybe feeling a bit left behind by the rush of technology too- kinda grumpy. Maybe that's why the children are laughing.

On the other hand, the ending does sound really druggy. What's with the drill? (Maybe laughing gas! )

But O, if we call the whole thing off then we must part,
And O, if we ever part then that might break my heart.
So if you say ee-ther, and I say i-ther,
I'll say ee-ther, and give up i-ther,
For we know we need each other so we'd
Best call the calling off off
Let's call the whole thing off. :breakdance:

One of the interesting lyrics on the album is "Rock bands died when amateurs won"...

Yeah, anybody can go in with two turntables and a microphone or a home studio sampler and a little cassette deck or whatever and make records in their bedrooms. It's that kind of do-it-yourself thing, where [people] don't feel like they have to go into a real recording studio ... That's where the whole CBGBs punk thing came from. Even if some people could play their instruments, the overriding feeling was that it didn't matter whether you could or you couldn't.
