Song of the Week- May 30- "She's Mad"

Postby Oedepus on May 31st, 2011, 12:58 am

Seems like we had to beat Aspie to this one!

Lyrics:

Bangin' his head
Stab in the back
Look her in the eye and Buddy, you can tell she's crazy
Smack in the face
Look at 'em go
Take a look around and you can see I don't mean maybe

If sex is a weapon
Who's winnin' this war?
My legs are too tired
I can't run anymore

She's mad
She's sore
I'm getting out for sure!
My time
Is up
I just can't stand this stuff

Said look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Oh now darlin'

Heaven's above
Look out below
B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B - Baby
Fell on his back
Rubbin' his head
Pretty little girl; sure as hell she ain't no lady

I'm mild as a bunny
I'm meek as a lamb
You lead me to slaughter
I'm mud in your hands

I know - I say
I'm findin' out today
Someway - somehow
I'm gonna pull you down

So blow me away
Leave me alone
I beg you please
Please come on home

Now look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Now look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Ooh now darlin'

All over the house
All over the town
Bit him in the hand and he turned around and hit her with a hammer
Flippity flop
Now when does he stop?
Now here they come again
And that's the way they live together

So look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Ooh now darlin'

Look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Now look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Ooh now darlin'

Look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'
Look where you're goin'
You don't even know what you're knowin'

This is one of David's best! I simply love all the effects, mom said it was pretty funny. Ruben has uploaded this video in excellent quality: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KY02DRTI

This one^ is really worth tracking down, great live versions of:
Buck Naked
Greenback Dollar
Now I'm Your Mom ( :!: )

I got some very specific images for this song, but it's hard to describe, It's more of a feeling I guess. I went through a brief period where I wished the latin bridges were altered to make She's Mad a regular rock number, but now I like it just the way it is. I think those latin parts make it very unique. It is my favorite song from Uh-Oh.

Something I'm able to describe is the final section, absent in the music video, it makes me imagine a sky full of stars!

Sorry to go silent. I'm on a family vacation. It's exhausting, and I have no computer. I'm tapping this into my phone!

Good choice, btw. I'd note that the title has a double meaning- mad/crazy and mad/angry. The perspective on domestic violence with the woman sometimes instigating it would be controversial, I suppose. Must dash.

I always took this one as a parody of "The Burning Bed" - she takes it for awhile, then, snaps.

I remember "The Burning Bed"! It was controversial at the time, but it's kind of cultural folklore too. (Woman as victim, finally rebels in self-defense). I think of the couple in "She's Mad" as having reached their own violent equilibrium. She bites him in the hand, he turns around and hits her with a hammer, and that's the way they live together. I'm not saying this is common, but it seems to be the situation in this one song. The Song and Circumstance Book says that the song is sung from the perspective of their child. "I just can't stand this stuff."

I get some Biblical vibes from the song. "I'm mud in your hand," could be a child referring to his parents' influence, but maybe also a "you are dust and to dust you shall return." And "look where you're going; you don't even know what you're knowing" reminds me of Christ's prayer from the cross "forgive them, Lord, they know not what they do." The coda that repeats the "look where you're going" line musically has this uplifting feel (shifting to 12/8 meter- kind of watlzy but still 4 main beats) that reminds me of forgiveness. Oe, I like the coda in "Between the Teeth" where the last line is unarticulated. It looks like he's singing "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." Shame to cut that off in any recording.

I'm always on the lookout for a reference to home in a DB song. Not sure what to make of the line begging "Please come on home" though. What's home for this family?

Wow, I'm a fairly devout Catholic, and I didn't see anything biblical in that song. LOL

You've done way more thinking than I ever did...

Yeah, my head is a strange place to be! Slaughtering a meek lamb is a Christian image, but I don't like the idea of a child sacrifice. Trying to turn this train of thought around! I'm gonna check out the video.

Your mom? Tell me I'm not corrupting a minor! Check out the gleaming white clothing in one "look where you're going" section- like an angel? Is that Weird Al in the last frame?

No minor, 21 years old

"I'm mud in your hands"=blood (to me)

I def feel the domestic violence vibe in the song, the video reinforces it a bit.

A happier time, before all the fighting and violence.

Whew, I thought I might have recommended Burroughs to a teenager! I had pictured you as older, but, you know, you thought I was a guy. Call it even?

Yep, the video hammers home the domestic violence theme. ;)

Oe, the coda reminds me of a sky full of stars too, and the tremolo on the violins reminds me of locusts singing. (They'll start up in a few weeks where I live. Sounds like summer). More than once, I've been lulled into a daydream by those violins, just to be startled by the first drumbeat on "Hangin' Out." Ack! :jumpyjumpy: I wonder whether they did that on purpose?

Yeah it's a shame they cut it from the video, it has so much potential for visuals. She's Mad is so intense that ending is really perfect, to melt down a bit. There's a noise somewhere in there that makes me imagine one of Dali's tall elephants passing by the sky.

You should check out Woody Allen's new movie. I hear Dali has a cameo!

The article you posted under Strange Ritual was fascinating. Constructing an artificial world within the actual world by looking for meaning in connections that exist- Maybe that's what we're doing looking at these songs! Maybe we're dreaming of a city too.

Anyway, I found a new connection. "You don't even know what you're knowin'" echoes the intro to "Road to Nowhere," when the chorus sings "we know what we're knowin'". They both sound divine to me. RTN like a church choir, and "She's Mad" like God understanding that we sin out of ignorance. Oprah quotes Maya Angelou saying something like "when we knew better, we did better."
