Song of the week- May 22- "Slippery People"

Postby Aspiemom on May 23rd, 2011, 4:23 am

It's May 22 already, how can it not be Pentecost yet? June 12 is crazy-late for Pentecost, but since Easter was late, and Pentecost is always 50 days after that. . . .

Anyway, Pentecost involved the descent of the Holy Spirit after the Resurrection that caused believers to speak so that they could be understood by anyone regardless of the hearer's native language. St. Paul later described "speaking in tongues" and "interpretation of tongues" as gifts of the Holy Spirit. Then Talking Heads wrote a song about it. (The history of Western Civilization in 3 sentences!) "Slippery People" is from the album Speaking in Tongues, and since DB is working on a new song entitled "Speaking in Tongues" with Arcade Fire, this seemed like a good song 'o the week.

In an earlier post, I said that "a wheel inside a wheel" and "living creatures" referred to the First Chapter of Ezekiel. The problem is that no one understands what the First Chapter of Ezekiel means, :?: , so that only gets you so far. Sigh. I think the song is about charismatic Christians- snake handlers, those who speak in tongues, faith healers, etc. "Slippery" may be a play on words- in one sense, they are sweaty; in another sense, they may be con artists.

I'm not sure these lyrics are right. I found them on one of those websites that tries to sell ringtones, but some of it was obviously wrong so I made some edits. Feel free to correct them.

What about the time
You were rollin' over?
Fell on your face
You must be having fun
Walk lightly!
Think of a time.
You'd best believe
This thing is real

Put away that gun
This part is simple
Try to recognize
What is in your mind
God help us!
Help us loose our minds
These slippery people
help us understand

what's the matter with him? He's alright!
I see his face The lord won't mind
Don't play no games He's alright
Love from the bottom to the top
Turn like a wheel He's alright
See for yourself The lord won't mind
We're gonna move Right now
Turn like a wheel inside a wheel

I remember when
Sittin' in the tub
Pulled out the plug
The water was runnin' out
Cool down
Stop acting crazy
They're gonna leave
And we'll be on our own
Seven times five
They were living creatures
Watch 'em come to life
Right before your eyes
Backsliding!
How do you do?
These slippery people
Gonna see you through
There's no way to communicate.

Just added this one to my practice list last week! I love the Stop making sense version with all the energy release at the ending. David brought this one back on the Feelings Tour.

This topic reminded me I haven't heard the cover version, I'll go look it up now.
Howdy-do? This is Peter McCalister, the FATHER. I'd like a hotel room,
please, with an extra-large bed, a TV, and one of those little
refrigerators that you have to open with a key. Credit card? You got it!

Thanks for the link. I'll start there from now on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Y0h-Wj2k4 weird thing is that the lyrics on this site are identical to those on the ringtone sites. Both places quote a line "This think is real," which I changed to "This thing is real." I checked two recordings, and I hear no "k".

I found this on YouTube from the BBC 4 documentary. It shows lots of people, you guessed it, spinning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Y0h-Wj2k4 It's kind of strange to see these behaviors in so many different cultures. I associate it mostly with the American South, but its much more diverse.

I find the speaking in tongues part of this song fairly difficult to sing. Makes me feel self-conscious. There's a much quieter speaking in tongues part on the "Speaking in Tongues" song.

A couple more thoughts on the lyric. It seems to be a storytelling song about two people visiting some kind of spiritual service, one of whom is more experienced and trying to reassure the other. Also, every time DB sings 7 x 5, I do the math. It's like a reflex- ooh, I know, 35! Does seven times five signify anything?
