This Week's Spotting of Talking Heads

The band and their music

This Week's Spotting of Talking Heads

Postby cyberyukon on September 7th, 2008, 11:50 pm

I started this thread back in mid-2005 and it became one of the longest lasting threads on the old message board. So it makes sense to carry it over to the new board!

Because here we are, thirty years later, and the band still continues to remain in our collective cultural conscience.

Here's how it works: if you see/read/hear something new about the band or band members post it here. Be it an online article, movie trailer or a brief blurb in a magazine add it in!

For instance, all-wise music guru Bob Lefsetz posted an e-mail on his site re: the leaked Guns 'N Roses tracks. The last line of that e-mail, serving to make clear the author's point, quotes a line from one particular Talking heads song. http://www.lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php

On the opposite end of the political spectrum, one of John McCain's attack ads has the intro to The Overload playing in the background: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjEKRIBDv6Q.

Hope this doesn't ruin the song for me...

Doesn't sound like the intro of "The Overload" to me...

Damn. My first post and I'm shot down by Francey himself. On 2nd listen I think you're right, which is actually a bit of a relief.

yet a little more politics inside an interesting read about copyright.

And two weeks ago, Warner Music Group got YouTube to remove a video attacking Barack Obama, which used pieces of songs like the Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House." (Spokesman Will Tanous of Warner Music Group, which represents the Talking Heads, says the request came from the band's management.)

On tonight's episode of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," Keith quoted "Life During Wartime" a few times in the fourth story (which concerned polling and the electoral map projections).

In the comment section of the B4MD homepage
http://www.beforethemusicdies.com/blog/b4md
I found the following:
"The packaging of what passes for music today reminds me of the disco era. It’s like processed cheese; it’s music-ish. Find what sells and flog the daylights out of it. And it’s a reflection of the technology available. You can’t fault a for-profit industry for trying to make a profit. It’s cheaper to pick a face and make it be able to sing than to find and cultivate actual musical talent. There has always been a battle between the art and the business. It swings like a pendulum altho’ perhaps never this far before. Eventually it has always swung back, and with a vengence. Hence punk, rock, rap. And then they, too, get sucked into the machine. Same as it ever was, same as it ever was."

The trailer for a new BBC wildlife programme had Wild Wild Life playing in the background.

There's a very brief clip from "Love for Sale" snuggled into the introduction of Adam Corolla's morning radio show!

If it was Ireland they were referring to it'd have to be "Road to Nowhere" !

here's IMDb's guide to pretty much every Talking Heads/Byrne song ever used in a movie/tv show :

Talking Heads :
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0848088/

David Byrne :
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0126154/

just watched Baby Mama with the gf last night and the movie kicked off with 'Stay Up Late' - also saw a b-grade Rob Schneider/Jon Heder film recently called 'Benchwarmers' in which 'Thankyou for Sending me an Angel' played during the finale .. Clerks 2 (damn I've watched some rubbish the past couple of years; believe me I do usually watch *good* films !) opened up with 'Nothing but Flowers'.
Caught a re-run of 'Revenge of the Nerds' the other night and 'Burning Down the House' was prominent during a scene in which, erm, a house was burned down ... oh, but the best useage of a Talking Heads song I've seen in a film was in Times Square, a film made in 1980, I was watching it (on VHS, couldnt get it on dvd) recently and there's a really cool scene in which the movie's two female leads are dancing down a NY street at night listening to 'Life During Wartime' on an ol' boombox ... cool !
