Questions about guitar parts

Postby Buck's Student on February 7th, 2011, 5:03 am

As a guitarist myself, I usually favor any band's guitar player, but Talking Heads has two really good ones (Plus Adrian and Alex!). I was wondering if anyone could tell me (Possibly Chris?) who played more guitar on the albums: David or Jerry, or was it more an equal thing?

Who played the slide guitar parts on "No Compassion," "The Big Country," "Cities," etc?

Thanks!

I did find this picture of Jerry with a slide (And a groovy Gibson SG with p90s!).

I think David did the rapid fire chops and stuff.

Not sure how much Jerry played guitar on the recordings, because he also did double duty playing the keys.

so I actually didn't help you out a whole lot.

sorry.

They're both impressive guitarists; I just want to know who played what.

Take into consideration that the first album has minimal keyboards.

this is a question that interests me too; I particularly would love to know who-played-what on TNOTBITH, especially the first disc.

I recall reading a quote from Tina which more or less said that Jerry got short-changed for credit when it came to his playing; that a lot of his guitar parts were attributed to DB and that a lot of his keyboard parts were attributed to Eno or others ...

I knew Jerry played the slide on Big Country, but that pic is awesome ...

Buck's, I think it may have been DB who played the slide part on No Compassion, in fact, check out this link :\

also, on live stuff like TNOTBITH, I kinda assume that DB plays the simpler (but funky) parts while he is singing.

Jerry plays the nimble little parts on I Zimbra, With Our Love and Found a Job whilst DB does his scratchy-chicken-guitar thing ...

this riff is kinda tricky I reckon :

Jerry plays a dexterous little one-string riff here, before playing a pretty cool solo ( technially the solo is not too difficult, but it's %100 awesome - and the bass kicks an unseemly amount of ass)

Jerry plays one part of I Zimbra here :

but plays a different part of I Zimbra here :

DB tends to allocate himself more of the solos though, like these two on Air and Cities :

DB plays the main riff on Artists Only (actually, Jerry is playing keys during that section so that's probably pretty obvious)
I feel as though they were basically at a pretty similar level of competency and technique; that's why their guitar interplay worked so well, it was like having one person capable of playing multiple parts.

Jerry was such a servant of the songs, as was Chris, both were seemingly content on playing simpler parts if neccessary to make the songs gel better, but were more than capable of embellishing or expanding their playing if needed.

I have read some comments on Youtube videos about Jerry never getting his full credit from fans - I have always seen him as the second guitarist more than the keyboardist.
