New Music

Postby reno on June 10th, 2009, 6:23 pm

Hey Kids

Anyone got any new music to recommend? I've been busy with a few new releases of which I'm obsessed with.

. Vectatimest by Grizzly Bear is one of the great albums of alt.folk. Imagine Fleet Foxes with more guitars and more interesting things to say.
. Microcastle by Deerhunter is a fantastic lo-fi indie album but wait! Its not depressing in any way, in fact its damn right uplifting. And the lead singer/guitarist, Bradford Cox, is total geek-chic.
. Miike Snow by Miike Snow is a slick, confident modern pop album. From the writers/producers of Britney's Toxic, these two guys really understand pop music. Its quite addictive.
. Living Thing by Peter, Bjorn and John follow up their massive Writer's Block album. Its not as immediate as the predecessor but its certainly as intelligent. Good to hear a heavy bass pop album with lots of unusual percussion.

Of course, I can see Talking Heads in all of them but then I see Talking Heads in everything.

Not the newest album but new to me is Sombunall by Beneva vs. Clark Nova. Highly recommended if you think songs ought to be created that have titles like "'Two Men Being Hospitalized When Only One Had To Be" and "88 Kilos Of Excrement" - I know I do.

Mama Lucky's Permanent Stranger, available from Jim White's website, is a lovely atmospheric listen.

Greetings Camden.

You know, back in the days ,one particular May 1977 week I could have gone to see Verlaine and Co. play Marquee Moon live in Brum.

I went to see another bunch of hopefuls instead ;)

And so to WHSmith's wherein I spy triple CD set New Romantics. Usual suspects, until Disc 3, whereupon
David Byrne and Brian Eno proffer The Jezebel Spirit.

Ye Gods! Fast Forward musta really happened! :o

Got myself the Stone Roses super-de-luxe boxset; the original album on 3 CDs (album + b-sides + lost demos etc), 1 DVD, 3 vinyls (album + b-sides + demo's all over again) + lemon-shaped USB stick with once again all the music that's also on the cds and vinyls as well as videos, more demos etc + book + artprints... all in a beautiful 12"x12" book and all that in a box.

Original album is from 1989 so not exactly 'New Music', but what a treasure chest...

The Bends-Radiohead
The Scientist-Coldplay
Life Is Long-David Byrne
The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes-Elvis Costello
Train In Vain-The Clash

I wouldn't exactly consider all of this "New Music", but it's all good stuff. ;)

got the Dirty Projectors album 'Bitte Orca' a couple of weeks ago, it's great, very original and fresh.
David Longstreth's guitar playing is awesome, apparently inspired by such African greats as Ali Farke Toure.

Apparently there's a David Byrne-link, Dirty Projectors released a song called 'Knotty Pine' with Byrne earlier this year and DB has raved about the album.
But that's not how I discovered them. I had Letterman on in the background a couple of months ago, and gradually became aware of the band and song that were appearing that night, as the tune slowly worked it's way into my mind.
I youtubed the performance again a while later then read up on the group and decided I wanted to splash out for the cd - glad I did because it is sooooo good; very different and a slightly disorienting at first, but it's an album that reveals a little more of itself every time you play it. Great stuff.
